”Breaking the Cycle: Human Trafficking Training for Dental Professionals”

Presented by Amber Lovatos, RDH, BSDH, MAADH and An Chih (Angela) Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH from Dental Hygiene Spark, LLC

Course Description:
In 2019, House Bill (HB) 2059, 86th Legislature passed legislation requiring health providers to take human trafficking training for registration and licensing renewal. This course was created in response to that legislation. This course aligns with the objectives set by the Texas Health and Human Services and will prepare health care providers to identify human trafficking situations. Every year millions of people are human trafficked and forced into labor or commercial sex work. Dental professionals are key players in combating human trafficking as they are equipped with the knowledge to identify abnormalities and signs of abuse in the head and neck. This course aims to break down misconceptions associated with human trafficking and human trafficking victims. After completion of this course the learner will be able to identify indicators of abuse and human trafficking. The dental professional will be equipped with the appropriate steps to implement in suspected human trafficking cases. They will also be provided with appropriate language to use with potential victims.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • The learner will be able to define human trafficking.
  • The learner will be able to identify signs of human trafficking.
  • The learner will be able to differentiate between the various types of human trafficking.
  • The learner will be able to appropriately document and report signs of victimization.
  • The learner will be able to develop a protocol to identify and respond to human trafficking victims.
  • The learner will be able to assemble a network of resources for human trafficking victims.
  • About the presenter:
Amber Lovatos, RDH, BSDH, has blazed trails personally and professionally for more than 10 years in the dental health space. Celebrated as her family’s first college graduate, Amber holds a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from The University of Texas School of Dentistry. As a clinician, educator, author, mentor, and champion for public health issues, she’s inspired colleagues across the industry with her empowering story that includes her triumph over abuse and lack of oral health access to discovering her identity as “The Latina RDH.”

Amber has dedicated her dental hygiene career to organizing community outreach events throughout the United States and supporting those who need her the most. With a focus on bringing affordable and accessible preventative dental care to communities like hers, Amber currently volunteers for a nonprofit dental clinic providing care to survivors of abuse and human trafficking and low-income patients who are uninsured. As a Latina leader in the dental hygiene community, her work has majorly consisted of bringing ethical care to her comunidad and providing care in rural parts of Texas using portable dental equipment including bringing free dental care to children in title-one schools.

Amber is also the co-author of Smiles Por Vida a Spanish; Spanglish not for profit children’s dental book that highlights the joy of a clean smile. Her recent work includes partnering with Crest & Oral-B on their Closing America’s Smile Gap outreach initiative to serve communities across the US in their efforts to bring oral health access, education, and representation. Amber also serves as Crest Oral-B’s partner and consultant in providing education opportunities, resources within dental communities, screenings to patients during nationwide dental access events, helping to deliver products to communities in need, and much more.

Through all her incredible work, Amber has been the recipient of numerous national and state awards and academic scholarships, including being named ADEA’s 2018 Crest Oral-B Dental Hygienists Pursuing Academic Careers, 2021’s Dimensions of Dental Hygiene Six Dental Hygienists You Want to Know, and 2022’s RDH Award of Distinction. Amber is also the recipient of TIME Magazine’s 2023 TIME 101 honoree award for her dedication to her work. Most recently Amber was awarded the The Latinx House inaugural Icon award for Health. With this recognition, she hopes to continue spreading opportunities to all looking to make an impact in the oral health space.

An Chih (Angela) Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH is a dynamic speaker that brings impactful and resourceful information to clinicians.
