Making Room for Grief: Grief Literacy for the Dental Professional

With Jeannette Diaz-Olivera

Course Description:

Grief is a natural response to loss which is a shared human experience. Grief may impact a person’s emotional, cognitive, social, and physical health. Dental providers will inevitably encounter their own loss or be exposed to patients and colleagues experiencing loss. Unfortunately, education and training opportunities surrounding death and grief literacy are scarce. It is essential dental professionals be equipped with the knowledge and communication skills to interact with people experiencing loss. This course is aimed to improve the dental professional’s awareness about grief literacy.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify and differentiate between different types of grief including anticipatory, disenfranchised, and prolonged grief.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms associated with grief and their impact on overall health and health behaviors.
  • Define grief literacy and describe its importance in creating compassionate and supportive dental environments.
  • Implement grief-informed approaches to improve patient care and team dynamics.
