Connecting the Dots: The Role of Dental Professionals in Sleep-Disordered Breathing
With An Chih “Angela” Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH, FADHA
Course Description:
This is a foundational course designed to introduce dental professionals to the essential concepts linking oral development and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). We will examine the connection between SDB and oral development. Underdeveloped jaws contribute to the root cause of SDB and its formation. By obstructing the upper airway and affecting facial structure and muscles, SDB significantly impacts patient well-being. Dental professionals should be alert for various signs and symptoms in children and adults of SDB during clinical evaluations. By understanding these indicators, we can effectively identify and assist patients toward a better quality of life.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of the sleep cycle on a person’s mental and physical health.
- Describe the origins of an underdeveloped jaw.
- Recognize how an underdeveloped jaw contributes to SDB.
- Identify signs and symptoms of SDB in both children and adults during clinical evaluations.
- Develop a protocol for the assessment of SDB and referral of SDB.
