HPV-Related Oropharyngeal Cancer: Early Recognition and LGBTQ Health Considerations

With Jonathan Jones

Course Description:

As a clinical dental hygienist, Jonathan Jones understands the challenge many dental professionals face knowing HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer is important to address but not always knowing how, or where, to begin. With nearly 30 years of chairside experience, he brings a practical, peer-to-peer perspective to a topic that is increasingly relevant in everyday dental practice.

This one-hour virtual CE course focuses on early recognition of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, with specific attention to LGBTQ health considerations. Jonathan explores how HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer often presents subtly, why it is frequently missed during routine exams, and which patient populations, particularly gay and bisexual men within the LGBTQ community, are disproportionately affected.

Participants will gain confidence in recognizing signs and symptoms, strengthening visual and tactile oropharyngeal assessments, and approaching patient conversations in an inclusive, stigma-free way that supports timely referral. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of their role in early recognition and a practical framework for acting early when something doesn’t look right.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the changing epidemiology and clinical presentation of HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, including populations at increased risk such as LGBTQ individuals.
  • Identify subtle signs, symptoms, and clinical findings associated with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer that may be encountered during routine dental examinations.
  • Apply visual, tactile, and communication strategies to support early recognition, documentation, and timely referral when oropharyngeal abnormalities are identified.

About the Presenter:

Jonathan is a clinical dental hygienist with nearly 30 years of chairside experience. His work focuses on HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, informed by daily clinical practice and long term patient care.

As a member of the LGBTQ community, Jonathan brings an inclusive perspective to discussions of risk and early recognition, particularly for populations disproportionately affected. He emphasizes what dental professionals do best: careful observation, thoughtful listening, and timely action.
