About this event
”Model Minority Myth: Dental Disparities Among Asian Americans”

With An Chih (Angela) Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH

Course Description:
The “model minority” stereotype is a harmful myth and disguises multiple disparities in an Asian American’s medical and oral health. Covid-19-related Asian attacks have increased discrimination in denying them access to healthcare. There are also individual and community variables unique to the Asian-American community that impacts their access to care. Individual variables include age, education, place of birth, language barriers, length of stay in the US, and availability of dental insurance. Community variables include the density of the Asian population, the availability of a dentist, and Asian-related resources where they live. There are Asian cultures that believe in holistic remedies to relieve dental pain. These cultural beliefs and practices, such as drinking tea daily, impact the condition of their teeth and the treatment plan a dental practice would recommend. When dental professionals understand the individual and community variables their Asian-American patient faces, they can provide the necessary resources to improve their patient's access to care and oral health.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the impact Asian-American stereotypes have on their access to oral healthcare.
  • Recognize the individual and community variables that may impede Asian Americans’ access to oral healthcare.
  • Discuss how an Asian-American’s cultural beliefs can influence their oral health.
  • About the presenter:
