Course Description:

Reviewing critical elements of dental hygiene local anesthesia for NBDHE – this includes Anatomy review (nervous system anesthesia and injection landmarks), Pharmacology, Anesthesia Agents (esters/amides), Anesthesia types/brands, Vasoconstrictors, Topical Anesthetic, MRD, Contraindications/Complications, Patient Positioning, and Equipment (armamentarium).

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Anatomy: Understand the relevant anatomical structures, including nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissues, to ensure effective and safe delivery of local anesthesia.
  • Pharmacology: Explore the pharmacological principles underlying local anesthetics, including their mechanisms of action, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.
  • Anesthesia Agents: Compare and contrast various local anesthetic agents, focusing on their properties, onset times, duration of action, and clinical applications.
  • Vasoconstrictor Agents: Examine the role of vasoconstrictor agents in local anesthesia, including their benefits, risks, and effects on anesthesia duration and patient safety.
  • Common Dental Anesthetics: Review the most commonly used anesthetic agents in dentistry, including indications, efficacy, and specific considerations for their use.
  • Maximum Recommended Dose: Calculate and apply the maximum recommended doses of local anesthetics based on patient weight, health status, and specific agent characteristics to minimize risks of toxicity.
  • Contraindications: Identify absolute and relative contraindications for the use of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors, ensuring safe and individualized patient care.
  • Process of Administering Anesthesia: Demonstrate the step-by-step process of administering local anesthesia, emphasizing patient assessment, technique, and safety measures to maximize comfort and effectiveness.
  • About the presenter:

    After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997 Paige began her career in dentistry as a dental assistant in 2000. She became a registered dental hygienist in 2005 after graduating from the Community College of Denver Dental Hygiene program. She practiced primarily in periodontal practices and provided temporary hygiene services through her company Temporary Toothpickers, LLC and worked providing CPR certifications through her company RDH To the Rescue, LLC.

    In 2012 Paige joined the Community College of Denver Dental Hygiene Program where she was faculty and clinical coordinator for 7 years and most recently served as Professor, Program Director, and Continuing Education Coordinator for the dental hygiene program. Paige now serves as Associate Dean of Allied Health at Arapahoe Community College. She also served two full terms on the Colorado Dental Board where she was Panel Chair, Full Board Vice Chair, and CE Reviewer. Paige received her Master of Dental Hygiene Education at the University of Missouri Kansas City and a Doctor of Education with an emphasis in Leadership for Educational Equity from The University of Colorado.
