From Panic to Pass: Mastering Hygiene School Studying Skills

August 17, 2026 6:30pm - 7:30pm CDT

Presented by: Diane Mullins

Course Description:

Dental hygiene school is one of the most challenging and overwhelming experiences many students will face, often leading to ineffective study habits such as passive reading, highlighting, and last-minute cramming. This course introduces the ARIST Method - a structured, evidence-based approach to learning that emphasizes active recall, repetition, image connections, self-testing, and teaching. Participants will learn how to shift from recognition-based studying to true understanding and recall, improving retention, confidence, and overall academic performance. This course provides practical, immediately applicable strategies that can be used across all areas of dental hygiene education, helping students feel more in control of their learning and better prepared for exams and clinical success.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Differentiate between passive studying techniques and active learning strategies used in dental hygiene education.
  • Explain the five components of the ARIST Method and how they support long-term retention and understanding.
  • Apply the ARIST Method to develop an effective and personalized study plan for dental hygiene coursework and board preparation.
  • Demonstrate the use of self-testing and teaching strategies to reinforce knowledge across multiple subject areas.

About the presenter:

With over 25 years of experience in dental hygiene, Diane brings both clinical expertise and a deep understanding of patient care. She earned her bachelor's in dental hygiene from the University of Colorado and a Master of Psychology from Grand Canyon University, which allows her to combine science with insight into how students learn best. After more than a decade in education, Diane now focuses on helping students master both content and study strategies. Her approach is built on evidence-based techniques that help improve retention, confidence, and exam performance.
