Course Description:
Dental hygienists are often the first to detect signs that a patient may require specialty care, but many miss the opportunity to advocate for timely, collaborative treatment. This course explores the hygienist’s critical role in identifying, communicating, and coordinating specialty referrals, including periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery, and orthodontics. Participants will learn how to recognize specialty candidates through clinical findings, confidently initiate conversations, and support case acceptance through education. This is another way to elevate dental hygiene role.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify clinical indicators that warrant timely referral to dental specialists through thorough assessment.
- Demonstrate effective communication strategies for presenting the need for specialty care to patients and collaborating with specialists to support comprehensive care and case acceptance.
About the Presenter:
Nichelle Venable is a nationally recognized dental hygienist, educator, and founder of The RDH Humanitarian Project, a nonprofit expanding access to preventive dental care for underserved veterans and seniors. With over 20 years in dentistry and leadership experience overseeing hygiene and periodontal programs across multiple dental practices, Nichelle has helped develop over 100 dental hygienists and drive the growth of more than 50 periodontic programs. She is a past President of the Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association and recipient of the 2024 NDHA Leadership Award.
Nichelle is passionate about elevating the role of dental hygienists in healthcare through education, leadership, and public health outreach.Her presentations combine clinical science, real‑world strategy, and powerful storytelling to inspire dental professionals to practice at the top of their license and make a greater impact in their communities.
