Rethinking Implant Maintenance: A Contemporary Perspective
Rethinking Implant Maintenance: A Contemporary Perspective
With Kristen Ranaldo, RDH, BSDH and Lynn Pencek, RDH, MS
Course Description:
Confused about dental implant maintenance? Me too… The dental implant industry is growing at a rapid rate. Advancements in technology and science are evolving faster than clinicians can keep up. What we were taught about implant maintenance in school varies depending on the year we graduated and may no longer reflect the current standard of care. Conflicting messages can be frustrating to dental teams. The science of implantology is industry and technology–driven; the disciplines of surgical placement, restorative, and hygiene maintenance often don’t communicate effectively with each other. To open that dialogue, we encourage restorative dentists to attend this class alongside their hygiene teams. This class will review changing trends in implant maintenance as they relate to biocompatibility, corrosion, and dysbiosis. We will also explore the role of modern diagnostic tools—such as the dental endoscope, subgingival bacterial testing, and systemic bloodwork—in identifying and managing peri-implant diseases. Adjunctive therapies will be discussed to support minimally invasive, evidence-based interventions that promote long-term implant health.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Review changing trends in dental implant manufacturing.
- Explore the role of dental endoscopy in peri-implant diagnostics and maintenance.
- Understand when and how to use subgingival bacterial testing and systemic bloodwork in treatment planning.
- Identify dental hygiene maintenance techniques that may contribute to implant failure.
- Identify risk factors that may lead to implant failure, including systemic, microbial, and mechanical contributors.
About the Presenter:
Lynn Pencek is a conduit between industry and clinical practice. Having experience both as a clinician and seasoned industry representative, she speaks both languages of clinical providers and industry leaders. When working with Nobel Biocare and the ENVISTA team, Lynn helped lead the charge to deliver cutting-edge patient care and rapidly changing technology. While working with confident teams that effectively communicate and deliver optimized therapy, Lynn experienced what contributes to a successful practice. As a school manager for Hu-Friedy, Lynn has targeted insights for finding the best instrument designs to aid clinicians in optimal efficiency. Lynn aims to share her experience with surgical assisting, clinical workflows, digital case planning, account and inventory management, marketing, and patient education for case acceptance. Exceeding goals as a territory manager for Nobel Biocare and multiple annual members of the Orascoptic Presidents Club, Lynn has developed relationships with dental teams and has become a trusted resource in the community. Lynn has served on the corporate council for the Dimensions of Dental Hygiene publication, representing both Nobel Biocare and Orascoptic, and has a unique insight into how the dental industry leads clinical practice and how clinical practice leads the industry. Lynn started her clinical career as a Broome County Community College Department of Dental Hygiene graduate. She received her baccalaureate from Thomas Jefferson University and the Department of Dental Hygiene and her Master of Science in Dental Hygiene from The University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Lynn has held Dental Hygiene faculty appointments at Thomas Jefferson University and Community College of Philadelphia. As a past president of the Philadelphia Dental Hygiene Society, a ten-year attendee of CARERFusion, and now the Director of Education for Peer2Peer Connect, Lynn continues to research and collaborate to help dental professionals explore options for having their best careers. Lynn speaks nationally about implant maintenance, works in private practice and is the owner of Practice At Your Best, LLC .
Kristen Ranaldo, RDH, BSDH is a dental hygienist who graduated top of her class from Farmingdale State College in New York in 2015, earning numerous awards including the Golden Scaler Award for exceptional clinical skills. With over a decade of clinical experience, the majority of which has been in periodontal practices, Kristen is IALD Millennium Periolase Hygiene certified and has been utilizing dental endoscopy throughout her career. Recognized for her consistent and remarkable clinical outcomes, Kristen became a dental endoscope expert and trainer, teaching dental professionals the most minimally invasive and definitive methods to treat all stages of periodontal disease. She has successfully treated countless patients—curing gingivitis and periodontal disease, as well as diagnosing root fractures and subgingival caries—while emphasizing meticulous home care and ongoing periodontal maintenance. In addition to her clinical and training work, Kristen is a Professor at Hostos Community College, where she educates and inspires future dental hygienists. She also lectures nationally on periodontics, sharing her expertise on advanced technology, minimally invasive treatment, and strategies to elevate patient care. Kristen firmly believes dental endoscopy is a revolutionary approach that can benefit every dental practice by improving outcomes and addressing the widespread prevalence of periodontal disease.
