Course Description:
Dental radiology is evolving rapidly—with new technology, updated safety guidelines, and refined imaging techniques reshaping everyday practice. This 1.5-hour course explores the latest advancements in dental imaging, including the debate on lead apron use, innovations in handheld X-ray devices, and practical tips for achieving consistent, diagnostic-quality images. Participants will leave with evidence-based insights to enhance patient safety, improve workflow efficiency, and confidently apply current best practices in dental radiography.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Discuss current recommendations and evidence regarding lead apron use in dental radiography and their implications for patient protection.
- Evaluate new handheld and portable X-ray technologies, including safety protocols, image quality, and workflow benefits.
- Identify and apply updated intraoral and extraoral imaging techniques that improve accuracy and reduce retakes.
- Integrate ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles into daily radiographic practice through modern equipment and technique optimization.
About the Presenter:
Shelley Brown, MEd, BSDH, RDH, FADHA, is a dental educator, speaker, content creator and mobile clinician dedicated to advancing accessible and innovative dentistry. As co-owner of HYGIENE edgeUCATORS, LLC she empowers dental educators through professional development. Since 2009, she has taught at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene and founded Homebound Smiles, LLC a mobile dental practice serving underserved patients. She also runs Shelley.Dental, a YouTube and TikTok platform focused on patient education and minimally invasive dentistry.
Shelley was a co-founder of Hygiene Edge, where she played a key role in growing the educational platform to over 100,000 YouTube subscribers and earning a Silver Play Button for its impact on dental education. She served on the 2023 RDH Magazine Advisory Board and has been recognized as a Top 50 Leader in Teledentistry, as well as a three-time Denobi Award nominee. In 2025, she was honored with the Sunstar Award of Distinction for her passionate advocacy for oral health access as well as the American Dental Hygienists’ Association stand out 7 for public health.
