Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Analyze current and emerging issues and challenges associated with dental unit waterline-related infections.
  • Differentiate between categories of products used for DUWL treatment and microbial testing, including their mechanisms of action, advantages, and limitations.
  • Evaluate the importance of implementing an evidence-based DUWL maintenance protocol, incorporating routine disinfection and microbial monitoring.
  • Design a comprehensive DUWL management protocol and methods to promote team compliance.

About the Presenter:

Bhumika Patel is a Professor at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. In her role, she teaches dental hygiene courses and provides supervision for clinical practice. Additionally, she holds the positions of CDHA Journal Editor, responsible for overseeing the publication of the journal of the California Dental Hygienists' Association, and President of the Delta Pacific Dental Hygienists' Association, where she leads the local segment of the professional organization. Bhumika also maintains an active role as a current clinical practitioner at a private practice situated in San Francisco.

She has over eight years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist, working in private family and pediatric practices, and U.S. Army Dental. She holds a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene with an emphasis in Dental Education from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, where she also completed her Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene. She has a postgraduate certificate in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics from the University of California, Riverside.

Her skills include dental education, laser dentistry, health prevention, and dental research. Her core competencies are communication, collaboration, leadership, and innovation. Her mission is to advance the dental hygiene profession through education, research, and advocacy. Bhumika’s field of expertise is the oral health promotion, especially those from underserved and diverse communities and understanding the role of psychology and mindset in the practice of dentistry. Her current research studies involve investigating the incorporation of leadership training in the curriculam and the role of emotional intelligence (EQ) for clinical success of dental professionals.
