
Head and Neck Anatomy: A Focused Review for Board Preparation

Course Description:
This course will help students strengthen their understanding of essential head and neck anatomy in preparation for their board examinations. Participants will revisit core concepts, including major anatomical structures, the muscles of mastication and facial expression, and the cranial nerves. The course emphasizes confident landmark identification, effective test preparation, and applying anatomical knowledge directly to clinical patient care.
Course objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the single and paired bones of the skull
- Define terminology related to head and neck anatomy
- Locate and identify the bones of the head and neck
- Differentiate between cranial, facial, and cervical bones
- Identify key regions and landmarks of the frontal and temporal bones
- Recognize major anatomical structures on a radiograph
- Label the muscles of mastication and facial expression
- Identify the muscles of the tongue, neck, and floor of the mouth
- List the 12 cranial nerves by name, number, nerve type, passage or exit, and innervation tissues
- Identify the major cranial nerves associated with the oral cavity
About the presenter:
Billie Lunt is a passionate dental hygiene educator with an in-depth understanding of teaching methodology. She is the Dental Hygiene Education Department Chair at NHTI Concord’s Community College in Concord, NH. She has been a dental hygienist for over thirty years and holds a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in Sociology. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Dental Hygiene Education and Public Health from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. She currently holds a position as the Chair of the NH Oral Health Coalition Steering Committee. She is a grassroots member of the state of NH on the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network. She is the Owner of The Happy Flosser RDH Podcast for dental hygiene students and the creator of Dental Hygiene Study Guides sold on Etsy and TikTok, designed to help students complete their dental hygiene program.
