Precision sharpening is a critical yet often overlooked skill in clinical dental hygiene practice. This course provides a comprehensive review of the principles and techniques essential for maintaining sharp, efficient instruments. Participants will gain a clear understanding of why sharpening is vital to patient care, ergonomics, and instrumentation effectiveness. The session will explore the anatomy of dental hygiene instruments, the science behind edge preservation, and the proper use of sharpening stones.
Through guided instruction and demonstration, attendees will review sharpening fundamentals, explore various sharpening stones, and practice techniques for maintaining ideal blade form on sickle scalers, universal curettes, and Gracey curettes.Course objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to identify:
- Why we sharpen and the necessary signs to look for
- When and how often sharpening should occur
- Anatomy of dental hygiene instruments
- Sharpening basics
- Sharpening stones
- Best practices for effectively sharpening sickle scalers, universal scalers & Gracey curettes
About the presenter:
Jody Hawkins, CRDH, is a dedicated dental hygienist and business owner based in Tampa, Florida. With over 10 years of experience in dentistry, first as a dental assistant and now as a registered dental hygienist, Jody brings a deep understanding of both clinical and technical aspects of patient care. She is passionate about creating a positive and relaxing dental experience for every patient while promoting oral health through education and prevention. In addition to clinical hygiene, Jody is the founder of UltraSharp Dental, a professional dental instrument sharpening company committed to helping dental professionals maintain precision, efficiency, and comfort in patient care.
