Silver Solutions: Prevention, Protection, Preservation
With Shelley Brown, MEd, BSDH, RDH, FADHA
Course Description:
Minimally invasive dentistry is transforming caries management by shifting the focus from surgical intervention to prevention, remineralization, and preservation of natural tooth structure. Among the most powerful tools in this movement are silver fluorides—including silver diamine fluoride (SDF), nano silver fluoride (NSF), and paired with ingredients like potassium iodide (KI) and magnesium chloride. Each offers unique benefits, indications, and considerations that can help clinicians manage early lesions, arrest decay, and support long-term tooth preservation. This course reviews the science of demineralization and remineralization and equips clinicians with practical strategies for identifying when and how to use silver fluorides effectively. Participants will also explore complementary remineralization technologies such as self-assembling P11-4 peptides, hydroxyapatite-based agents, povidone-iodine, and calcium/phosphate products. Through case-based discussion and evidence-driven protocols, clinicians will gain the confidence to integrate silver fluorides into routine care and empower patients with at-home support tools.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Explain the demineralization and remineralization processes and their role in caries progression and prevention.
- Differentiate between silver diamine fluoride, nano silver fluorides as well as those with potassium iodide, and newer magnesium chloride–containing formulations, including their mechanisms, indications, and limitations.
- Evaluate evidence-based strategies for incorporating silver fluorides into remineralization protocols for all patients.
- Apply case-based learning to integrate minimally invasive, silver-fluoride–centered protocols into everyday practice and long-term patient care.
- Discuss other remineralization therapies and outcomes.
