Course Description:
Do you think patients, in general, are becoming more demanding, unreasonable, or aggressive? Sixty percent of dental team members have experienced verbal or physical abuse from patients. Patients can present with odd patterns of behaviors, unreasonable demands from the staff, and unrealistic expectations of treatment outcomes. When inappropriate behaviors are not addressed or unreasonable demands are not met, it can lead to angry outbursts or violence. This course prepares the dental professional with awareness of common personality disorders, how to identify red-flag behaviors, and communication strategies to
diffuse tense situations and prevent escalation.

About the presenter:
Kimberly A. Erdman, EdD, RDH, FAADH, FADHA is a dental hygienist and public health dental hygiene practitioner. She started her career as a civilian-dental hygienist for the U.S. Navy and spent 9 years as a volunteer forensic dental technician. She has 10 years of experience in higher education and academic affairs leadership. Kimberly is a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology, University of Bridgeport's Fones School of Dental Hygiene, and Morgan State University. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene and
Fellow of the American Dental Hygienists' Association.
