Course Description:
This engaging and practical continuing education course provides dental hygienists with a comprehensive review of herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). Participants will gain insights into the microbiological background, clinical signs, and symptoms associated with HSV-1. The course explores over-the-counter and prescription treatments, innovative therapies like laser applications, and unconventional treatments like hand sanitizers and rubbing alcohol. Attendees will also learn about clinician protection protocols and patient management strategies for active herpetic lesions. This course is designed to refresh your knowledge, enhance your clinical practice, and promote safe and effective care.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the microbiological characteristics and clinical manifestations of herpes simplex virus 1.
  • Differentiate between various treatment options, including OTC products, prescription medications, and emerging technologies like lasers.
  • Evaluate current research on unconventional treatments for herpetic lesions, including hand sanitizer applications.
  • Implement clinician protection measures and follow protocols for treating patients with active herpetic lesions.
  • Apply evidence-based practices to manage HSV-1 in a dental setting effectively and safely.
  • About the presenter:
    Dana Paladino has been in the dental field for over 13 years. She started her career as a dental assistant before attending dental hygiene school at UT Health San Antonio. After graduation, she worked clinically prior to transitioning into education. During this time, she obtained her Master's in Aging and Dementia Studies. She has taught at 3 different dental hygiene institutions, and she now owns her own educational consulting business. Her company, Dental Hygiene Basics, has a mission to help 100,000 students add RDH to their name. She works hard to achieve this mission every day by creating free content on the Dental Hygiene Basics Podcast, providing scholarships for current dental hygiene students, and educating as a national board tutor. Dana is also a public speaker, StudentRDH educator, and CDCA examiner. She continues to practice one day a week as a public health hygienist in San Antonio, TX.
