About this event
”Fearless: Dental Anxiety in Children”

With An Chih Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH

Course Description:
Recognized by the World Health Organization, Odontophobia, the fear of dental visits, significantly impacts overall well-being. The resulting implications on oral health substantially hinder necessary dental treatment, often leading to discomfort and the realization of extensive care requirements, triggering a cycle of negative emotions, including guilt, shame, fear, and anxiety.

The development of DFA stems from various factors such as age, socioeconomic status, cultural influences, family dynamics, clinical environments, specific dental procedures, parental anxiety, and past dental encounters. This course emphasizes non-pharmacological behavioral techniques and recommended appointment strategies to foster positive experiences for pediatric patients, assuaging their anxiety.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the fear of dental treatment and anxiety in children – leading to a vicious cycle.
  • Identify the factors that contribute to dental anxiety in pediatric patients.
  • Apply behavior guidance techniques for positive dental visits with pediatric patients.
  • About the presenter:
An Chih (Angela) Do, RDH, MEd, MAADH is a dynamic speaker that brings impactful and resourceful information to clinicians. Angela’s background in film and television, allows her creativity to expand beyond the operatory and into her presentations. As an immigrant and first-generation student, Angela knows the impact that education can make. This awareness drives her to empower dental professionals with the tools they need to better care for their patients. Whether Angela is teaching hands-on laser courses, providing resources for dental professionals to combat human trafficking, or educating on appropriate language to use with pediatric patients, Angela always delivers an informative but captivating program.

The Pediatric RDH is not just a speaker, mother, and operations manager she is also one of the American Dental Hygienists’ Associations most influential leaders. She is President of the Greater Houston Dental Hygienists’ Association and Speaker of the House for the Texas Dental Hygienists’ Association. She is also a District IX delegate and appointed for the 2021-2022 IDEA committee for ADHA. The do-all-things dental hygienist, is also a mother of two young boys and wife.
