The Unspoken Strain: Women’s Health Challenges in Clinical Dentistry
The Unspoken Strain: Women’s Health Challenges in Clinical Dentistry
With Stephanie Botts, RDH, BSDH, CEAS
Course Description:
Women make up the majority of the dental workforce, yet their unique hormonal, physical, and cultural challenges often go overlooked. From monthly cycles and pregnancy to menopause, these biological shifts—paired with dentistry’s physical demands—contribute to a higher risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
This course is for everyone—regardless of gender—who wants to better understand and support female clinicians. We’ll explore how hormonal changes impact the body and mind, how caregiving and cultural expectations create additional stress, and what can be done at the individual and systemic level to promote clinician wellness and longevity in practice.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe how hormonal fluctuations across the lifespan impact female dental clinicians' physical and emotional well-being.
- Identify key risk factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders in women and how these intersect with life stages like menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.
- Implement evidence-based strategies to support wellness, improve ergonomics, and foster a more inclusive and sustainable dental workplace.
About the Presenter:
Ms. Stephanie Botts has practiced clinical dental hygiene for over 17 years and is the founder of Polished Posture, an ergonomic consulting company for dental clinicians. She currently practices in Denver. Stephanie is passionate about dentistry, especially the role dental professionals can play in a patient’s overall health. She has spoken at the Denver Cardiology Summit, advising physicians and cardiologists about the oral/systemic link and the damaging effects of medication-induced dry mouth. She has spoken at numerous dental hygiene and dental annual sessions about substance use disorder and chemical dependency.
Stephanie is excited to provide information about substance use disorders and how to effectively communicate with patients and team members about this condition.
