I Spy...Pathology! Unraveling the Secrets of Dental Radiographs for Optimal Care
With Andreina Sucre, RDH, MSc, International Dentist
Course Description:
In this CE, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of dental radiographs and their crucial role in diagnosing oral health conditions. Dental professionals will learn to demystify dental imaging for patients, explaining the risks and benefits of various techniques, including bitewing, periapical, panoramic, and CT scans. They will also discover how to communicate the importance of early diagnosis and tailored treatment plans through appropriate imaging choices, addressing patient radiation-related fears.
The course will systematically interpret different dental images by focusing on key anatomical landmarks and radiographic findings within specific zones. Participants will master techniques to confidently identify and differentiate between normal and abnormal features, enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, they will learn to recognize the radiographic appearance of fractures, cysts, tumors, and other dental anomalies, including maxillary sinus lesions, especially those triggered by periodontal disease.
Participants will compare and contrast the radiographic presentations of common oral pathologies across different imaging modalities, such as panoramic X-rays and CT scans. They will also be equipped with the knowledge to determine when a CT scan is necessary for comprehensive assessment and diagnosis. By the end of this course, participants will have the skills to interpret dental radiographs confidently, educate patients, and improve diagnostic outcomes in their practice.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify the importance of using X-rays and CT scans as diagnostic tools in the dental practice.
- Classify the anatomic landmarks according to the different zones in the maxillofacial region.
- Categorize the most common pathologies according to the different areas in the maxillofacial region.
- Assess the importance of digital imaging in the diagnosis of oral pathologies.
- Generate a decision tree of the maxillofacial region's most frequent radiolucent and radiopaque images.
About the Presenter:
Andreina Sucre, CRDH, MSc, is an oral pathology educator, international dentist, writer, and nationally recognized speaker with over two decades of clinical and academic experience in dentistry, oral surgery, oral pathology, and dental hygiene.
Originally trained as a dentist in Venezuela, Andreina completed advanced specialization in Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. She practiced for over ten years as an oral surgeon and oral pathologist, performing biopsies, managing complex oral diseases, and collaborating in multidisciplinary diagnostic care before relocating to the United States. She is currently licensed and practicing as a Certified Registered Dental Hygienist in Florida, where she integrates pathology-driven clinical reasoning into preventive care and early detection.
Andreina’s educational work centers on helping dental professionals move beyond surface recognition toward biologically grounded interpretation of oral findings. Her courses emphasize differential diagnosis, early recognition of disease, and the critical role of the dental hygienist in intercepting pathology before progression. She is the creator of The Patho RDH, an evidence-based educational platform dedicated to oral pathology education for dental professionals.
She has been invited to speak at leading national conferences including RDH Under One Roof and the American Dental Hygienists’ Association National Convention, making history as the first international dentist selected to present in these spaces. Her writing has been widely published in RDH Magazine, RDH e-Village, and DentistryIQ, and she currently serves on the RDH Magazine Editorial Advisory Board (2025–2026). In 2025, her educational impact was further recognized when she was shortlisted for the Denobi Awards.
Andreina delivers continuing education through live, virtual, and hybrid formats, offering clinically relevant, visually driven, and academically rigorous programs designed to strengthen diagnostic confidence and clinical decision-making among dental professionals.
