About this event
”Attention-Grabbing: ADHD Friendly Dental Care”

With Katie Steger, RDH

Course Description:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition for which there is no cure. Learn how ADHD symptoms impact patients in the dental setting, as well as at home when providing self-care and what you can recommend to improve compliance. You will gain insight into how unmanaged ADHD raises the risk for depression and substance use disorders, and what to be mindful of when treating adolescent female patients. Research into the typical dietary preferences of people with ADHD will also be explored, as well as the impacts on oral health. Walk away with a better understanding of how to help this patient population achieve their oral health goals.

Course objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Develop an updated understanding of ADHD, its various presentations, and how symptoms may affect a patient seeking dental care.
  • Describe the implications of ADHD and its impacts on mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Explore the research on diet preferences of a person with ADHD, and how oral health can be affected.
  • Deliver improved home care recommendations to patients with ADHD and executive function challenges.
  • About the presenter:
Katie Steger is a dental hygiene educator and neurodiversity advocate. As an autistic person with ADHD, Katie understands the challenges navigating a world not built for people like her, and through her work, seeks to expand the knowledge of dental professionals so they can best support their neurodivergent patients.
