Position: Perio Registered Dental Assistant
Department: Dental Assistants
Reports to: Assistant Liaison
Role:Dental assistants are responsible for efficiency in the operatory as well as being skilled in both technical procedures and human relations. Assistants should remember that patients frequently identify with team members, and as such, assistants have a great influence on the practice. Patients are impacted by the way things are said, appearance and how they are treated. Assistants must remember to be polite and provide quality patient service.
Responsibilities
APPOINTMENT PREPARATION
Operatory should be clean, set-up and ready for each patient
The tray should be set up according to the treatment that is to be done
Review each patients chart IN ADVANCE so the doctor is aware of any special needs etc.
Greet each patient BY NAME in the reception area, escort them into the operatory, seat them and place the bib.
Review the health history and note any changes
Review with patient what is on the treatment plan for the day, take any x-rays if needed
If appropriate, place topical in and around area to be anesthetized and offer a magazine if there will be a wait for the doctor to come into the room.
Call the doctors attention to any notes , concerns or needs the patient has for the appointment
ASSISTANCE DURING TREATMENT
Work with the doctor as an extra pair of hands and eyes
During treatment, evacuate the mouth, exchange instruments, maintain a clean work area and follow instructions given by the doctor
Ask the patient by name throughout the appointment if they are doing okay and if they need anything
Stay with the dentist at all times during treatment unless told otherwise.
Escort the patient to the front desk to “help with today’s charges and scheduling the next appointment”. The next appointment should be in the appointment que – ask the doctor what they would like for the next appt and how many units. Let the front desk know what the next appointment should be AND how much time is needed
Thank the patient for coming in and tell them you look forward to serving them again. The patient should leave feeling like they have been served by friends.
AFTER TREATMENT
Break down the operatory and wipe ALL surfaces down, this includes x-ray unit, handles, computer surfaces etc.
Sterilize instruments used
Make certain the operatory is clean and tidy – INCLUDING THE FLOOR, waste containers, sinks etc. Eliminate any odors

Phlebotomy Certification
