Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)
Reports To: Endodontist / Practice Leader
Status: Non-exempt, Regular, Full-time/Part-time
Position Summary
The Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) supports the Endodontist by performing
both chairside clinical duties and administrative tasks to ensure efficient, high-quality
patient care. This role combines advanced EFDA skills with specialized knowledge of
endodontic procedures, including root canals, retreatments, and microsurgery. The EFDA
promotes patient comfort, ensures strict adherence to infection control protocols, and
maintains smooth clinical operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Support
• Prepare treatment rooms with appropriate instruments, materials, and equipment
• Assist chairside during endodontic procedures (root canals, retreatments,
apicoectomies, etc.) using four-handed dentistry techniques
• Provide suctioning, instrument transfer, and maintain clear visibility for the
endodontist
• Take and process digital radiographs (x-rays) as directed
• Re-cement temporary or permanent crowns with temporary cement if directed
• Assist in the placement/removal of matrices and rubber dams
• Oversee/Ensure the accuracy of clinical notes and patient post-operative reports
Patient Care
• Greet and prepare patients for treatment, explaining procedures and providing
reassurance
• Take and record medical and dental histories, vital signs, and treatment notes in the
patient’s chart/EHR
• Provide post-operative instructions and reinforce proper aftercare
• Maintain a professional, compassionate demeanor to ensure excellent patient
experience

Infection Control & Safety
• Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment according to OSHA and CDC
standards
• Wear proper PPE and model safe practices for the clinical team
• Follow strict infection control and HIPAA guidelines
• Maintain CPR/BLS certification and be prepared to assist in dental/medical
emergencies
• Monitor and maintain operatory cleanliness, sterilization area, and supply inventory
Practice Support
• Support front desk staff with scheduling, patient flow, and administrative duties as
needed
• Document procedures and treatment notes accurately in practice software
• Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with clinical standards
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required
• Graduate of an accredited Dental Assisting Program with Expanded Functions
certification (CODA-approved)
• Radiology certification (per state requirements)
• Current CPR/BLS certification
• Minimum ~1–2 years of dental assisting experience; endodontic or specialty experience
preferred
• Proficiency with dental/medical software (e.g., EndoVision, TDO, etc.)
