Dental Assistant Job Description
Summary/Objective
The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing essential chairside assistance to the dentist, performing various patient care duties, and ensuring the efficient and organized operation of the clinical area. This role requires strong clinical knowledge, excellent patient care skills, and adherence to all health and safety regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
Chairside Assisting:
Anticipate the dentist's needs and efficiently hand instruments and materials.
Maintain a sterile and organized field by using suction, water, and air.
Prepare and mix dental materials such as cements, impressions, and composites.
Take and develop diagnostic X-rays (radiographs) as directed by the dentist, ensuring proper patient protection.
Assist with a variety of procedures, including but not limited to fillings, extractions, root canals, and crown and bridge preparations.
Patient Care:
Greet and escort patients to the operatory, ensuring they are comfortable and draped.
Take and record vital signs, medical history, and chief complaint.
Provide pre-operative and post-operative instructions to patients, explaining the procedure and prescribed care.
Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and plaque control.
Sterilization and Infection Control:
Prepare and maintain treatment rooms, ensuring they are clean, stocked, and ready for patient use.
Sterilize and disinfect all instruments and equipment according to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
Manage and properly dispose of contaminated waste.
Administrative and Other Responsibilities:
Record Keeping:
Accurately chart patient data, treatment plans, and services rendered in the patient's electronic and/or physical record.
Manage and securely handle patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Inventory and Equipment:
Monitor, track, and order dental supplies and materials to maintain adequate stock levels.
Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of dental equipment (e.g., suction lines, compressors, handpieces).
Office Support (as needed):
Assist with scheduling patient appointments and managing the recall system.
Handle phone calls, process payments, and assist with insurance documentation.
Assist the dental team in managing medical or dental emergencies.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients and the dental team.
Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy, patience, and compassion for patients.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow directions precisely.
Proficiency in dental terminology and procedures. (Preferred not required)
Knowledge of infection control standards (OSHA) and patient privacy regulations (HIPAA). (Preferred not required)
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Familiarity with dental practice management software
